DNA Sampling

At some point, after being convicted by the court, you may receive a letter at home instructing you to come to the police station to provide DNA material. This is possible in cases where you have been convicted of a criminal offense for which you can be taken into pre-trial detention. Your DNA will then be recorded in a DNA database. In the event that DNA is found at a crime scene, the DNA database will be searched to see if a match can be found between the DNA found at the crime scene and the profiles in the DNA database. You cannot object to the collection of DNA material; however, you can object to the storage of your DNA material in the DNA database. Please note: if you wish to object, this must be done within 14 days after the collection of the DNA material. If you receive a summons to provide DNA material, it is advisable to contact us as soon as possible to discuss the options.
